As people age it is hard for them to recognise that they still deserve a good quality of life. Unfortunately, many elderly people can be under stimulated and don’t spend much time engaging in life. As a live in carer there are many ways you can plan activities and days out with your client to ensure they stay active, both mentally and physically.
It is important to consider what the client is like and what they would enjoy doing. Discuss their likes and dislikes, what time of the day they prefer to do activities and do they enjoy spontaneous activities or not, for example. When you have discussed these starter questions with your client, take a moment to write up a plan or routine so you know when you can fit the activities in throughout the days and weeks ahead.
Day trip ideas
Day trips are a great way to get your client out of the house and to enjoy different surroundings. It is also beneficial to invite your client’s friends or family members along to these activities to ensure they are socialising as well.
City days out
City days can be a daunting idea for the elderly but with the right preparation and research, it can be great to go sight-seeing and visiting cultural attractions. Be mindful of the ability of your client and what they are comfortable with. If your client is in a wheelchair, remember to plan accordingly by choosing areas that are easily accessible.
Go outdoors
The outdoors can be beautiful, and it is important that elderly individuals have the opportunity to go out and experience fresh air and a change of scenery. Try taking them to botanical gardens, parks or for even just a stroll through the countryside. Remember to take into account your clients limits when planning to go outside.
Retail Therapy
Shopping is something most people enjoy, so why not take your client to a large retail park where they can buy some new things and enjoy themselves.
Seaside
The seaside is always a lovely day out, especially when the sun is shining! (Don’t forget the SPF though!) It’s a perfect combination of activities and relaxing. There are usually lots of fun attractions at the beach, but it can also be a great place to take a seat and eat traditional fish and chips or an ice cream.
Restaurants
Sometimes home food can get a bit too repetitive and eating out is a great way to mix it up and can be really enjoyable. You could do this monthly or on occasions. Once you know your clients’ tastes you can find specific restaurants that would suit them well.

Meaningful activities can help engage your client’s attention with their interests and the things they enjoy. There are many benefits that having days out can have on your client
- Physical activity and health – If the activity or day out involves physical exercise then this can benefit your client by keeping them active and assist in preventing other health problems by maintaining mobility.
- Improved quality of life – By clients going out and experiencing things they haven’t done before or just going out to enjoy themselves, it can help them have an improved quality of life.
- Mental stimulation – Participating in new experiences and days out can help the client engage their brain in new ways which are very important for elderly individuals.
- Social interaction – Activities and days out that include social interaction is great for improving mental health in your client and can combat any feelings of loneliness or isolation.
