Care Work Is More Than a Job. It Can Be a Career.
One of the biggest misconceptions about social care is that there are limited opportunities to progress. In reality, care work can be the beginning of a long and rewarding career pathway.
We are proud to create opportunities for colleagues to develop their skills and progress into new roles across the business. Many of our office based colleagues and managers originally started their careers as Care Assistants, bringing valuable frontline experience and insight into the decisions they make every day. Through training, mentoring and ongoing support, colleagues can progress into roles such as Quality Officer, Care Coordinator, Recruitment, Service Manager and beyond. Professional Care Workers’ Week is a great opportunity to celebrate not only the incredible impact of care work, but also the career pathways available to those looking to grow and develop within the social care sector.
Working directly with service users provides invaluable knowledge and experience that can open doors across many areas of the organisation. The practical skills developed within the care industry, from communication and problem solving to leadership and safeguarding, create strong foundations for future progression.
Professional Care Workers’ Week 2026: Looking Ahead
This year’s Professional Care Workers’ Week, organised by The Care Workers’ Charity, runs from 14-18 September and has been shaped by care workers themselves through the Care Worker Advisory Board. The programme includes a series of free virtual CPD sessions covering career development, workforce rights, inclusion and financial wellbeing.
Some of the sessions taking place during the week include:
- From Crisis to Career: Building Long-Term Futures in Care (Monday 14 September, 10am) – exploring career pathways from entry-level care roles through to leadership positions.
- A Fair Day’s Pay: Understanding the Fair Pay Agreement (Monday 14 September, 12pm) – examining what the agreement could mean for pay and working conditions.
- Know Your Rights: Breaking Down the Employment Rights Bill (Wednesday 16 September, 12pm) – practical guidance from legal experts on the latest legislation.
- Understanding the Care Workforce Pathway (Thursday 17 September, 12pm) – highlighting progression opportunities, training and professional recognition.
- Inclusive Care: Supporting Neurodiverse and Disabled Care Workers (Thursday 17 September, 2pm) – focusing on creating a more inclusive profession through lived experience and best practice.
- Care Worker Pensions: Building Financial Security for the Future (Friday 18 September, 1pm) – helping care colleagues better understand long-term financial planning.
These topics reinforce an important message that sits at the heart of the care industry: there are genuine opportunities to learn, develop and progress. Many experienced Care Coordinators, Quality Officers, Quality Coordinators and Service Managers began their careers in frontline care roles, developing the skills, knowledge and confidence that helped them take the next step in their careers. Professional Care Workers’ Week highlights not only the impact care colleagues have every day, but also the rewarding career pathways available within the sector.
