Supporting Independence in Scotland: Understanding the Independent Living Fund
At MyLife Homecare Edinburgh, we’re passionate about helping people live independently, with dignity and choice. One of the most impactful ways this is made possible in Scotland is through the Independent Living Fund (ILF), a vital source of financial support for disabled people with high care needs.
What Is the Independent Living Fund?
The Independent Living Fund Scotland is a government-backed initiative that provides funding to disabled individuals, enabling them to live independently in their communities. Originally part of a UK-wide programme, the Scottish Government established ILF Scotland in 2015 to continue supporting those with significant care needs after the UK fund closed.
In a major development, the Independent Living Fund was reopened to new applicants in April 2024, following a £9 million investment. This move reflects Scotland’s ongoing commitment to inclusive, person-centred care and support.
Who Is Eligible for ILF Scotland?
The Independent Living Fund is available to disabled people who require substantial support with daily living. It works alongside Self-Directed Support (SDS), giving individuals the freedom to choose how their care is delivered, whether that’s through a personal assistant, homecare provider, or other tailored arrangements.
There’s also a Transition Fund for young disabled people aged 16–25. This fund helps with key life transitions such as leaving school, starting work, or moving into independent living. Since its launch, the Transition Fund has supported over 5,000 young people across Scotland with more than £12 million in grants.
Why ILF Matters to MyLife Homecare Edinburgh
For many families in Edinburgh and across Scotland, navigating care options can be challenging. The Independent Living Fund offers a lifeline, providing not just financial support, but the ability to make meaningful choices about how and where care is delivered.
At MyLife Homecare Edinburgh, we’ve seen first-hand how ILF can transform lives. Whether it’s enabling someone to remain in their own home, access community activities, or receive personalised support, the fund empowers individuals to live life on their own terms.
Local authorities are increasingly encouraging eligible individuals to explore ILF as a funding route, and we’re here to help make that process easier.
