Winter is on its way, it’s shocking how quickly the time passes by. As we age, it becomes more important to care for the skin, especially in winter, like exfoliating more often, lip balm and night creams.

Nature provides us with everything we need, for good health both inside and out so why not try some foods you can use for skin care.

These are just a few of the foods that you can use for skin care and some ideas for winter skin care essentials that you can make at home, from exfoliating, nourishing, cleansing and toning to moisturising.

Anti-Ageing Coconut Oil & Almond Moisturising Exfoliator

Coconut oil dotted around my home is so versatile; you can use it for cooking, in your hair, as a moisturiser, and make an exfoliator.

To make a simple but effective exfoliator:

  • A few drops of natural, organic almond oil
  • 1/2 cup organic raw virgin coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup raw organic sugar

Mix the sugar and almond oil into the coconut oil – coconut oil solidifies so although it might melt a little while mixing, it will solidify. Store in a jam jar, or other container that is air tight.

The ingredients in this lovely and natural exfoliator will nourish and moisturise your skin, while removing dead skin cells, keeping you looking glowing and beautiful during winter. You can use this on your face, and all over your body.

Almond oil is rich in vitamin A, B and E. It will keep your face moisturised and provide a glow. It also soothes dry skin.

Coconut oil is rich in skin benefits, including vitamin E, it deeply moisturises, while being an antibacterial and anti-fungal action. It also helps to prevent the appearance of wrinkles and ageing.

Sugar has a surprising benefit to the skin, aside from the exfoliation effect of the sugar crystals, it’s also a natural source of glycolic acid. This helps to renew skin cells and reduces signs of ageing.

Avocado & Kiwi Nourishing Face Mask

This is a wonderful and simple face mask to moisturise and control sebum production for oily skin.

  • 1 avocado
  • 1 kiwi
  • 1 tspn organic honey

Simply spoon out the flesh of the avocado, then do the same with the kiwi, add a teaspoon of natural, organic honey and mix. Apply to your face, relax for 10 to 15 minutes. You could add slices of cucumber to your eyes while you relax as this can refresh your delicate skin around the eyes, helping to remove dark circles, reduce any puffiness, and signs of ageing. Remove face mask by gently using a flannel and cool water.

Both the kiwi and avocado is packed with vitamin C which helps keep the skin firm, while the avocado also contains oleic acid which helps keep skin soft and moisturised – it also helps to regenerate damaged skin cells.

Rose Water Soothing, Cleansing Toner

Rose water is great for the skin as a toner and cleanser. You can pick up a bottle of rose water that you might use in indian cooking in the supermarket. It feels calming and refreshing.

Rose water soothes irritated skin, balances and cleanses oily skin, softens and tones more mature skin, and helps keep that healthy glow. You can also add it to your bath, or when you rinse your hair after washing.

You can make your own rose water by steeping rose petals in water.

Shea Butter & Lavender Protective Moisturiser

  • 1/2 cup organic virgin shea butter
  • 1/4 cup organic raw virgin coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup almond oil
  • a few drops of lavender essential oil

Add all the she butter and coconut oil to a pan and gently melt on low heat while stirring. Add the almond oil and lavender essential oil, stir in and then transfer to a bowl and whisk it up so that it’s light and fluffy. Store in an airtight pot of your choice.

Shea butter is great for the skin as it strengthens and protects. Lavender oil smells divine, while helping to keep skin clean.

Make them as gifts

You could make batches of these to gift to loved ones.

Store batches of body scrub in a glass kilner jar, or moisturisers and face masks in a small tub and decorate with a nice ribbon, making these a wonderful Christmas present.
